Use the JBER PCS Overview and your gaining unit or sponsor as the source of truth for reporting and in-processing. Separate what must happen before travel from what happens after arrival, and keep copies of orders and required documents accessible rather than packed with household goods.

Compare on-base and off-base housing without guessing
Military OneSource identifies privatized on-base housing through Aurora Military Housing and separate Military Housing Office support for off-base options. Current JBER guidance says incoming personnel not residing in dorms or barracks must visit the Military Housing Office within two duty days of arrival for an in-processing brief.

Test the commute as a winter routine, not a map distance
Anchorage, Eagle River, and Mat-Su communities can create very different daily patterns. Compare the route to the duty location and expected gate, the time of day you will travel, road conditions, household services, and the amount of driving your family is actually willing to sustain.

Protect the gap between arrival and permanent housing
Military OneSource lists the North Star Inn as JBER's temporary lodging facility and advises making reservations as far in advance as possible. Pet-friendly inventory is limited. Current guidance also describes TLA documentation and housing-search requirements, so verify eligibility and current rules rather than assuming a specific number of reimbursable nights.
Keep an arrival kit with documents, medication, work gear, cold-weather layers, chargers, pet supplies, and enough household basics to function if the main shipment is delayed. JBER relocation resources also identify a lending closet and eligible loaner furniture support.
