Moving to Juneau, Alaska: Housing and Logistics Without a Highway

Start with housing availability, before choosing your moving day

A Juneau move can be manageable with preparation, but arriving without a housing plan leaves too much to chance. The Alaska Department of Labor’s March 2026 rental survey found 38 vacant units among 934 surveyed in the City and Borough of Juneau: a 4.1% vacancy rate. That is a dated survey sample, not a count of homes available today.

For two-bedroom apartments, the survey reported an average monthly contract rent of $1,620 and an adjusted average of $1,750, which accounts for utility costs. These figures describe surveyed rentals, including existing tenancies; they are not quotes for a newly advertised apartment. Your actual cost depends on the property, lease, included utilities, and availability.

Use that context to start early and compare actual options. A rental that fits your move-in date, pet needs, accessibility needs, and commute may take longer to find than an unrestricted search. Make the housing search specific enough to act on

Write down your maximum total monthly housing cost, required move-in date, number of bedrooms, and essential features. Then compare addresses across downtown, Douglas, the Mendenhall Valley, and Auke Bay against the places you need to reach. Check the actual commute, parking, and transit schedule rather than assuming every Juneau address offers the same daily routine.

• Prepare your application: Have employment or income documentation and references ready to share securely with a verified landlord or property manager.
• Verify the unit: Request a live video walkthrough or an in-person visit by someone you trust. Confirm who has authority to rent it before sending a deposit.
• Read the details: Ask about lease duration, utilities, heating, laundry, parking, storage, pets, and snow removal. A furnished short stay is not necessarily a year-round rental.
• Arrange a fallback: If permanent housing is not ready, reserve temporary accommodation with a clear end date, cancellation terms, and an affordable extension option.

For a purchase, coordinate inspection, financing, insurance, closing, and possession separately from your travel booking. Ask about property-specific maintenance, drainage, and hazard history. You cannot drive all the way to Juneau

Juneau has local roads, but no through-highway to Anchorage, the Lower 48, or neighboring highway-connected communities. Travel Juneau’s transportation guidance explains the air and ferry options. Treat the water crossing as a reservation that shapes your whole move.

Haines and Skagway connect to highways through Canada. Neither provides a final road into Juneau. Check the Alaska Marine Highway System’s live schedules and service notices before building your route; this guide does not promise a daily sailing or a particular fare.

When requesting a ferry reservation, supply the dimensions of the vehicle and any trailer or attachments. Confirm acceptance of a rental moving truck with both the rental company and the ferry operator. Review AMHS travel policies for check-in, pets, vehicle restrictions, and cancellation terms. Pack medication, documents, and overnight essentials in a bag you can take upstairs: routine car-deck access is restricted while underway.

Juneau’s ferry terminal is at Auke Bay, about 13 miles from town according to AMHS terminal information. Arrange pickup or onward transportation, particularly if you arrive without a vehicle. An arrival in Juneau is not yet an arrival at your front door.

Plan the last mile for furniture and household goods

Compare a full-service mover with a freight option based on what you can pack, load, and receive yourself. For example, Alaska Marine Lines describes palletized, less-than-container-load service for used household goods between service centers, and operates a Juneau service center. A terminal-to-terminal service is different from delivery into your home.

Ask each provider for a written quote that answers five questions: Where does pickup start? Where does delivery end? Who loads and unloads? What charges apply if the shipment must wait? What protection applies if something is damaged? Provide an accurate inventory and ask about packing requirements and prohibited items before sealing boxes.

Compare the cost of shipping bulky items with replacing them after arrival, but confirm local stock and delivery first. Keep work equipment, essential clothing, prescriptions, identification, and a small kitchen kit with you where carrier rules allow. If the shipment arrives before possession of the home, you need a receiving and storage plan; if it arrives later, you need a workable first week.

Budget for the days between arrival and being settled

The moving quote and first month’s rent are only part of the cash needed. Build a worksheet using actual quotes for:

• Housing deposits, initial rent or closing funds, and any overlap with your current home.
• Flights or ferry fares, vehicle transport, fuel, lodging, meals, and pet travel.
• Packing, freight, unloading, storage, and final delivery.
• Temporary accommodation, local transportation, utility setup, and essential replacement purchases.

Add a separate delay scenario: seven extra nights of lodging + seven days of transportation and meals + any quoted storage or change fees. Seven days is a planning exercise, not a prediction. Use it to decide whether your plan remains affordable if travel, freight, or housing dates shift. Ask your employer about relocation assistance and the timing of reimbursement before depending on it.

A practical Juneau relocation checklist

Use these suggested checkpoints as a starting point; housing and transport availability may require more lead time.

• Eight to twelve weeks before arrival: Set your budget, begin housing conversations, compare routes, and get freight quotes. Identify a temporary stay if needed.
• Four to eight weeks before: Coordinate housing dates with travel and shipment reservations. Confirm vehicle measurements, packing requirements, and a receiving contact.
• One to two weeks before: Recheck service notices, check-in instructions, keys, utilities, pickup arrangements, and your fallback accommodation.
• Arrival week: Document the home’s condition, inspect delivered goods, confirm your commute, and keep receipts and delivery paperwork together.
